Thomas recently had the opportunity to do Sound Design with Megan Follows (Reign, Anne of Green Gables)
Director of the one woman production of Carousel written by Jennifer Tremblay at the Nightwood Theatre.
I was asked to do vocals on two songs one an original written by Thomas and the second an Elvis Presley cover song .
My first thought was Elvis shouldn't be a problem. I've had a few successful karaoke Elvis moments.
However this wasn't your typical Elvis song I was being asked to sing. Surrender is from a young Elvis with a ridiculous vocal range.
This is the playful movie Elvis who at times I could swear was channeling Marlene Dietrich. Still I felt up to the challenge.
In the play the actress watches a band sing in a small club, we had to have that live feel, so we recorded off the floor with minimal takes.
We also had to allow room for the actress to talk during the songs so the instrumentation had to be minimal.
The production centres around a girls longing for her wayward father and dealing with painful childhood memories.
We thought it would be appropriate to share the songs with you on Father's Day.
